January 28 2015 – Reed Smith LLP today announced that litigator Paul Gupta has joined its Intellectual Property, Information & Innovation Group from DLA Piper. Gupta will continue to represent clients on both the East and West Coasts.
“Paul is a well-established lawyer on both coasts, with a strong reputation for work in the technology field, as well as in commercial litigation, including cybersecurity, licensing, indemnity and outsourcing matters,” said James T. Hultquist, Reed Smith’s Intellectual Property, Information & Innovation practice group co-leader. “He’s got tremendous experience and some very good client relationships. We are in a growth mode on the East and West Coasts, and he will spend time in both places.”
Gupta is currently or has recently been lead counsel in federal district court cases in California, Delaware, Kansas, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. A 1974 graduate of Harvard Law School, he is a member of the Editorial Board of Thomson Reuters’ FinTech Law Report, and serves on the advisory boards of Bloomberg’s BNA Computer Technology Law Report and Electronic Commerce & Law Report.
“Reed Smith’s stable, single global partnership is an appealing structure for my expanding practice,” said Gupta. “In addition to its global platform – which will be of significant benefit to my clients’ businesses – the New York, San Francisco and Silicon Valley offices are a trifecta for me, as for years I have worked in all three markets extensively.”
“We are delighted to have Paul join our New York office,” said Doug Wood, Reed Smith’s New York managing partner. “His successful record of serving high-tech firms on the West Coast and across the country will strengthen the connections among our U.S. offices, and provide Reed Smith with additional firepower in all sectors affected by technology, security or innovation.”
Gupta is widely recognized for the results he has achieved for clients in e-commerce, electronics, computer systems, information technology and telecommunications. Chambers USA describes the new Reed Smith litigator as “a zealous advocate for his clients,” noting he is “praised as a great negotiator and strategist,” “renowned for his work in the technology arena,” and “extraordinarily accessible.” Gupta is listed in Super Lawyers and in IAM Patent 1000 – The World’s Leading Patent Practitioners.
Gupta joins some 100 lawyers in Reed Smith’s global Intellectual Property, Information & Innovation Group, which BTI Litigation Outlook 2013 ranked as a “Powerhouse” based on extensive interviews with more than 350 general counsel and chief legal officers of large companies. The group’s members are regularly recognized as leading lawyers in the World Trademark Review 1000, Chambers USA, The Best Lawyers in America 2013, and as "Leading IP Strategists" by Intellectual Asset Management Magazine.
