Global law firm Reed Smith advised AMC Networks Inc. (AMC) on the acquisition of the German media company Kinowelt Television GmbH (KinoweltTV), including its film rights and licences.

Founded in 2004, KinoweltTV was the first German TV station completely dedicated to high-class feature films. During the past ten years KinoweltTV has become a household name in German speaking countries. With this acquisition AMC expands its European presence with full distribution across all platforms in German-speaking Europe.

The Reed Smith Munich team, led by partner Dr. Stephan Rippert, advised AMC on all aspects of the acquisition, as well as advice on all related media regulatory issues, tax, and labour and employment law. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval.

Dr. Stephan Rippert, Reed Smith corporate partner commented:

“The successful completion of this acquisition enables AMC to expand its television business into Germany, Austria and Switzerland for the first time. Our strong corporate, media, tax and employment expertise allowed us to provide a full service to the client, resulting in the smooth delivery of the deal.”

The full team comprised: partners Dr. Stephan Rippert (on corporate/M&A, media and media regulatory aspects) and Thomas Gierath (on tax); and associates Artur Korn (on corporate/M&A), Katharina Weimer (on media), Frank Mizera (on corporate/M&A) and Claudia Röthlingshöfer (on labour and employment).
