International law firm Reed Smith today announced the appointment of John Tan as counsel to the firm’s Global Regulatory Enforcement Group. Based in Shanghai, John joins the firm following two years as China Regional Compliance Director for Pfizer (the world's largest pharmaceutical company), three years in private practice in Shanghai, and over a decade of criminal defence and criminal investigation experience in the US.

John provides valuable skills in compliance and litigation, especially in the areas of life sciences. At Pfizer, he was responsible for conducting FCPA and compliance investigations in mainland China, as well as handling responses to government investigations. John is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, both spoken and written.

Reed Smith opened its Shanghai office in July 2011, with the appointment of Jay Yan as Office Managing Partner.

Roger Parker, Reed Smith’s Managing Partner for Europe, the Middle East and Asia commented: “We’re continuing to build our Asia practice and John’s arrival allows us to further expand our China-Hong Kong and Asia capabilities to help all types of clients doing business throughout Asia, especially in the life sciences sector.”

Jay Yan, Reed Smith’s Shanghai Office Managing Partner added: “Our clients are operating throughout the region and we now have a stronger skill set in these sectors linking our Beijing and Hong Kong offices with Shanghai. John brings us key experience, not only with FCPA and internal investigations, but a deep knowledge of the risk factors unique to the China market for drug and device companies.”
