Global law firm Reed Smith has announced the appointment of partner Winston Penhall and associate Matt Evans to its Funds Group in London. Both Winston and Matt re-join Reed Smith following their moves to KPMG, in 2012 and 2013 respectively, where Winston was the founder and leader of the KPMG funds law team.

Winston has a broad funds practice, advising on the formation of alternative investment funds, including: hedge funds and private equity funds; the establishment of onshore and offshore investment managers; the review and negotiation of fund wrapped and managed account investments for institutional investors; and the drafting and negotiation of manager and fund service provider agreements.

Matt focuses on fund and manager formation, institutional investor advice and ISDA negotiation.

The Reed Smith Funds Group comprises more than 20 partners globally with geographic coverage in the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany and Hong Kong who advise managers and investors on fund and manager formation, regulatory and tax matters and trading agreements and underlying investments.

Recent years have seen Reed Smith successfully building its financial services practice across Europe and the United States, most recently with the appointments of leveraged finance partner Ben Davis, who joined the firm’s London office from Travers Smith in March, and funds partner James Hnilo who joined the firm’s Chicago office in April. The firm also recently bolstered its European corporate and finance capability in Paris, with the arrival of Hogan Lovells partner Isabelle MacElhone who joined the firm in February.

In 2012 Reed Smith launched its structured finance practice with the arrival of partner and head of structured finance Tamara Box and partners Helena Nathanson, Nick Stainthorpe, Claude Brown and Ranajoy Basu (promoted to partner in 2014). 2012 also saw the launch of the firm’s Europe and Middle East private equity group with the arrival of partner and head of EME private equity Perry Yam.

Nola Beirne, vice chair of Reed Smith’s financial industry group for EME, commented:

“We’re thrilled to welcome Winston and Matt back to Reed Smith. Winston and Matt will be great additions to our growing global Private Funds practice, which includes leading practices across our network. Winston is a seasoned private funds lawyer whose experience in a wide array of private funds will be a tremendous asset to our clients."

Winston Penhall commented:

“Reed Smith’s platform incorporates multi-disciplinary practices in the major international asset management hubs of Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the United States. I look forward to growing the Funds practice in Europe and working with my colleagues across the firm to provide investment management and investor clients with a seamless international service.”
