Global law firm Reed Smith has announced the appointment of Kate Brimsted. Kate joins the firm’s Europe and Middle East corporate group and its data security, privacy and management practice as counsel in London, further strengthening its global data advisory practice.

Kate has advised in the area of data protection and privacy for over 15 years, working with a broad range of clients on both commercial matters and dispute resolution. She has particularly strong experience in the transportation, energy, media and technology sectors having advised clients including BP, Chevron, Transport for London, Stagecoach South Western Trains, BSkyB and Time, Inc. Kate joins us from Herbert Smith Freehills, where she led the global information governance and data privacy practice.

Reed Smith’s global data security practice has continued to grow to meet increasing client demand, with the arrival of four new lawyers in the past three years and with nearly 45 lawyers worldwide practising in the area of data protection and privacy.

Cynthia O’Donoghue, Reed Smith partner commented:

“Our leading market position has been enhanced by the group’s ability to provide clients with global services; and Kate’s arrival adds significant depth to our European capability with her particular expertise in the sectors of transport, energy, media and technology (for which we are known), which will be a huge asset to our team.”

Kate Brimsted added:

“What attracted me to Reed Smith was the quality and breadth of their established global data security offering. North America has been at the vanguard of so many technology-driven privacy and compliance developments and so there’s tremendous leverage to be gained from the firm’s preeminent US practice, for the benefit of my clients and my practice. I’m very much looking forward to working closely with my colleagues across the global team.”
