The Beijing office, which opened in 2008, is housed in the China World Trade Center, in the Central Business District in Beijing, the political, educational and cultural center of the country, providing Reed Smith a strategic location that strengthens the firm’s client service capabilities in multiple practice areas and industries.
The Beijing office has nearly 20 lawyers who offer extensive experience to key industries including financial services, private equity, energy, manufacturing and technology. Firm lawyers represent clients across the spectrum of industries in matters involving general corporate; securities and equity offerings; complex commercial litigation; product liability; estate and wealth planning; private equity; intellectual property and technology; insurance recovery; global regulatory enforcement; and labor & employment.
Our Beijing office represents clients involved in many of China’s most important corporate transactions and trade-related matters. The team has decades of experience in handling first-of their-kind transactions, including one of China’s first hotel joint ventures, the first JV related arbitration, and one of the first mergers governed by the PRC’s M&A regulations. Lawyers in our Beijing office have been closely involved with the evolution of PRC law and policy, representing clients in the areas of corporate law, M&A transactions, capital markets, project finance, distribution and trading rights, IP protection, antitrust, and employment law.. The Beijing team also works with Chinese clients around the world representing PRC companies on their overseas investment projects.
In addition to transactional work, our Beijing office is also experienced in commercial arbitration and dispute resolution. Hugh T. Scogin, Jr. is a member of the CIETAC panel of arbitrators, and our team has represented a variety of multinational clients in arbitral proceedings in China. Lawyers in the Beijing office, in conjunction with trusted local PRC litigation counsel, frequently assist clients in dealing with the Chinese dispute resolution process. Matters we have worked on include contract and commercial disputes, IP protection, employment and product liability.
Many members of the team are experienced US lawyers with the expertise and skills to advise multinational clients on the implications of their China operations and their compliance with US law. In close collaboration with Reed Smith colleagues in the US, Hong Kong, Europe and the Middle East, they can bring together the necessary teams to assist clients from all these regions in regulatory compliance issues.
