He has been based in the Far East since 1999 and has worked in London, Hong Kong, Singapore and Sydney. He was a founding partner of Reed Smith’s Singapore office when it was established in 2012.
Barry’s practice covers both advisory and disputes work in the shipping, commodities, upstream oil and gas (offshore energy), construction, mining, insurance and telecommunications sectors. He has been recognised for his work in the shipping, commodities and offshore energy sectors by the major legal directories and is ranked as one of the leading shipping lawyers in Singapore.

In the commodities sector, he has advised on and arbitrated disputes arising out of trading contracts for most soft commodities (including palm oil, grains, cotton, cocoa and sugar). Importantly for the Asia Pacific region, he has extensive experience of trading and storage contracts for oil, coal and ore.
In the offshore energy sector, he advises clients on ship sale/purchase contracts, newbuilding and conversion contracts (for rigs, FPSOs, pipe-laying vessels, fallpipe vessels and flotels), EPIC contracts, exploration/seismic-survey contracts and offshore support and supply vessel chartering contracts. He has also handled several complex and high-value arbitrations relating to the design, construction and chartering of offshore vessels.
As counsel in international arbitration, Barry has handled arbitrations in London, Hong Kong and Singapore under the ICC, SIAC, LCIA, LMAA, SCMA, HKIAC, GAFTA, FOSFA and the ICA. In 2012, he became a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He also has extensive experience of court proceedings in London, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia.
