Lane focuses his practice on representing a diverse array of business interests before Virginia administrative agencies, the Virginia General Assembly, the State Corporation Commission, and state and federal appellate courts.

Prior to entering private practice in 1992, Lane was a full-time faculty member at the University of Virginia Law School from 1969 until 1986, last serving as Professor of Law and Associate Dean.  He still teaches courses there on legislation, and conflicts of interest, lobbying and campaign finance.  Lane served as Chief Deputy Attorney General of Virginia from 1986 until 1992, and has had 25 years of experience with state Attorneys General and the National Association of Attorneys General.  His private practice experience includes representation of the Governor, Lt. Governor, the General Assembly, and individual legislators in state constitutional law cases in state circuit court, and in appeals and an original action before the Virginia Supreme Court.  He also has provided legal advice on state constitutional law issues to the Administration and the General Assembly.  Lane led the team that has been retained by the new Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine to be outside counsel.  He was with Hazel & Thomas, P.C. from 1992 until the firm's combination with Reed Smith in 1999.
