As leader of the firm's Appellate Group, Ray's practice focuses on commercial appellate matters, including unfair competition and other business torts, employment discrimination, products liability, telecommunications litigation and regulation, intellectual property and financial services litigation. He has had principal responsibility for more than 150 appellate matters in the state and federal courts, and has argued numerous cases before the state Courts of Appeal, California Supreme Court and Ninth Circuit.
Prior to focusing his practice on appellate law, Ray also worked on commercial litigation matters at the trial court level. He is a member of the California Academy of Appellate Lawyers, is certified as a specialist in appellate law by the California State Bar Board of Legal Specialization, is the former Chair of the Appellate Practice Section of the Bar Association of San Francisco, and is a member of the firm’s Diversity Committee. Ray also has been appointed to the State Bar's Committee on Appellate Courts, and he serves on the Board of Directors of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and on the Board of the Center for Youth Development Through Law. Ray was selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers In America in Appellate Law and as a Northern California "Super Lawyer".
Representative Matters
Meyer v. Sprint Spectrum, (Cal. Supreme Ct. No. S153486, 2009). Obtained affirmance of judgment dismissing putative consumer class action.
Physicians Interindemnity Cooperative Corp., etc. v. Aguilar, (Cal. Ct. App. No. B171655, 2005). Obtained reversal of $8.0 million breach of fiduciary duty judgment following jury verdict against former trustees of physicians interindemnity trust and direction that judgment be entered in favor of clients.
American Mortgage Network v. Loancity.com, et al., (Cal. Ct. App. No. D044550). Retained post-verdict in appeal that reversed a $3 million breach of contract, breach of fiduciary, trade secret and punitive damages verdict.
Reudy v. Clear Channel, (9th Cir. 08-15072, 2009). Affirming dismissal of business tort claims.
Iowa Telecomm. Servs. v, Iowa Utilities Board, __ F.3d __ (8th Cir. Apr. 28, 2009). Affirming judgment upholding public utilities commission decision recognizing telecommunications company's right to interconnect with local exchange carrier.
