Hugh focuses his practice on mergers & acquisitions and corporate transactions involving East Asia, particularly China, and on the international activities of Chinese enterprises. For more than 20 years Hugh has advised clients on China-related mergers & acquisitions, foreign direct investment, technology transfer, business operations, securities, and employment and dispute resolution. He is a member of the panel of arbitrators of CIETAC. Since first practicing in Beijing in 1985, Hugh has been one of the pioneers of the China law field and has spent much of his time resident in Beijing.
Also generally recognized as one of the foremost U.S. academic authorities on Chinese law, Hugh has taught Chinese law at several leading law schools in the United States and abroad, including Yale Law School and the New York University School of Law. He has published two books and numerous articles on Chinese law, as well as books and articles on Japanese law, German law, and international business. Additionally, Hugh has consulted with many Chinese organizations on legal reform.
