Reed Smith's environmental practice is global not only geographically, but substantively as well. We regularly counsel clients in every substantive area of environmental law, including air, water, solid waste, hazardous waste, infectious waste, transactions, building management, right-to-know laws, and the handling, transportation, regulation and cleanup of hazardous substances, wetlands and real estate transactions in the United States and Europe.
Since the 1970s, when they first started litigating environmental issues for the steel industry, Reed Smith's environmental attorneys have provided litigation, counseling and regulatory services in the following industries: oil and gas, alternative energy, utilities, mining, manufacturing, chemicals, health care, pharmaceutical, real estate, waste management, and food processing sectors, as well as for government entities, academic and research institutions, and trade organizations.
Our attorneys represent clients before the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and regulatory authorities in many states, including California, New York, Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Michigan, New Jersey, Virginia and Washington.
Reed Smith's Environmental Group brings a national scope to Brownfields redevelopment projects. We regularly advise clients on the cleanup of Brownfield sites using state voluntary cleanup programs, and have assembled a database of available grant and loan applications for Brownfields development.
Additionally, we have conducted or reviewed environmental due diligence materials and have counseled a major real estate investment trust ("REIT") on environmental issues involving property acquisitions in virtually all of the 50 states, as well as in Canada and Europe. This requires our environmental attorneys to be familiar with applicable legal requirements in multiple jurisdictions.
Our U.S. environmental attorneys have also coordinated the environmental due diligence review for the acquisition of industrial operations in the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, China and the United States. They have also conducted environmental due diligence for acquisitions in the UK, Scotland, France, Spain, Italy, Poland, Germany, Romania and Thailand.
