Reed Smith Leads the Way for Philadelphia Museum's Indian Art Exhibit

In what Reed Smith attorney Ajay Raju describes as "a long overdue cultural exchange on the world stage," "Rythms of India: The Art of Nandalal Bose" is now installed as a special exhibit in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The exhibit, which opened June 27, is co-sponsored by the firm and longtime client Bank of New York Mellon and is the first major Indian art exhibition to leave India for the United States since 1997.

In the four years since Roderick Palmore, then-general counsel of Sara Lee, issued a Call to Action to diversify the legal profession, awareness of the issue has continued to grow, resulting in an increased number of diversity initiatives within law firms and corporate legal departments. Despite these notable developments, however, obstacles remain in retaining diverse attorneys and in advancing them to partnership and leadership positions. As Bear Stearns careened toward its eventual fire sale to JPMorgan Chase last weekend, the cost of protecting its debt, through an instrument called a credit default swap, began to rise rapidly as investors feared that Bear would not be good for the money it promised on its bonds. Not familiar with credit default swaps? Well, we didn't know much about collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) either — until they began to undermine the economy. Credit default swaps, once an obscure financial instrument for banks and bondholders, could soon become the eye of the credit hurricane. Fun, huh?
