Reed Smith Media & Technology Seminar Series 2013: Content Delivery

Following the success of our Digital Seminar series in 2012, the Reed Smith media and technology team is pleased to announce this year’s exciting new seminar series specifically designed for media and technology in-house counsel and business affairs executives.
The 2013 series of seminars focuses on topics that were identified - by the 2012 seminar participants - as high on agendas for the year ahead. In an effort to address all the key issues, the series will feature guest speakers and experts from industry who will put the legal issues under discussion into a commercial context.
The team will be hosting six seminars during 2013:

Software
Content delivery
Employment law issues for media companies
Advertising, sponsorship and marketing
Copyright law reform
Music rights wizardry
The first seminar was held in March and focused on software. The next seminar is on content delivery, and topics include:

The ways in which current technologies can be expected to develop and what new technologies will be coming on stream – we will consider what challenges this brings for business models. The discussion will be led by an external technical expert.
Describing the principal elements of the deals that have to be put in place to deliver content to consumers via the different distribution platforms
Looking at the legal problems that have emerged from the retransmissions of channels on platforms such as TV catch up, pub showings (for example of Premier League football), and other ‘communications to the public’.

Copyright remedies: High Court rejects application for proprietary relief

Does a copyright owner have a proprietary claim to property purchased from the proceeds of an infringement of copyright? On 5 February 2013, Mr Justice Newey delivered a detailed judgment in the High Court that provides a clear indication of the limitations on the remedies available for infringement of copyright. Since the decision in Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation and others v David Harris and others [2013] EWHC 159(Ch), we have found ourselves advising on, and have given a lot of thought to, the legal and practical implications of this case.
