Steve is a member of the Life Sciences Health Industry Group, practicing in the area of product liability litigation. Steve joined Reed Smith on January 1, 2003, when the firm merged with Crosby, Heafey, Roach & May. The former head of Crosby Heafey's products liability group, he served as the leader of the Reed Smith Products Liability Practice Group from January 1, 2003 through June 30, 2007.
Steve, named one of California's top rainmakers by California Law Business, has served as a court-appointed arbitrator in more than 40 cases. Based on recommendations of prominent clients and professional peers, he has been nominated and listed in An International Who's Who of Product Liability Defense Lawyers for several years. He also was named as one of Northern California's Super Lawyers in each year from 2005 through 2012.
After joining Crosby Heafey in 1977, Steve concentrated his practice on civil litigation with an emphasis in pharmaceutical and medical devices, product liability, premises liability and general business litigation. Steve has represented numerous medical device and pharmaceutical companies including: American Home Products (diet drugs); Eli Lilly and Company (DES and Prozac); Medtronic, Inc. (surgical shunts); Pfizer Inc (orthopedic implants, vaccines, and antibiotics); Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing (3M) (silicone gel breast implants); St. Jude Medical, Inc. (mechanical heart valves); Sofamor Danek Group, Inc. (orthopedic bone screws); Syntex Corporation (baby formula); and United States Surgical Corporation (surgical sutures, staples, clip appliers and trocars). Serving as regional and national counsel, he has tried individual personal injury cases that have received nationwide media coverage and has also represented clients in class actions and multi-district litigation.
Steve was a member of the national trial team for 3M in breast implant litigation, and was responsible for all aspects of litigation strategy and case handling in over 70 actions in the western United States. He also served as national counsel for St. Jude Medical on the Silzone Heart Valve Litigation. He has performed product liability and risk management counseling for manufacturers and distributors, including review of product labeling and warnings, document retention, crisis management, product recall and related topics. In addition, Steve has defended a nationwide contract security provider throughout California in cases claiming personal injury, death and/or property damage.
Steve grew up in Southern California. He served three years as an Air Force officer. He is an avid reader (history and biography), photographer and loves endurance sports, especially competitive cross-country skiing and cycling. Steve and his wife Dorine were law school classmates. They live in Piedmont, California, and have three adult children.
