Related Professionals: Peter Hardy Robert Falkner

Global law firm Reed Smith has today announced the appointment of Douglas Cherry, who joins the Commercial Disputes Group EME as partner in the firm’s London office. Douglas joins from Eversheds, where he was a principal associate in the Litigation and Dispute Management Team and a key senior member of the Financial Disputes and Investigations Team.

Douglas has extensive experience in leading major financial services and markets investigations and handling FCA enforcement matters. His practice focuses on advising banks, broker-dealers, investment management firms and other regulated firms responding to investigations by authorities including the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority.

A highly experienced contentious practitioner, Douglas is also a skilled non-contentious lawyer, having previously worked for the Financial Conduct Authority and having had prior experience working within a specialist financial services regulatory team, where he provided clients with regulatory advice across the investment banking, broker-dealer, asset management and alternative investment fund sectors.

Commenting on the appointment, Reed Smith partner Peter Hardy, leader of the Commercial Disputes Group, said:

“There has recently been a significant growth of financial services investigations and enforcement defence work in the UK, which is predicted to continue in both the UK and throughout Europe. Douglas’s expertise in contentious matters will allow us to meet this growing demand and significantly expands our capability in this area.”

Reed Smith’s financial services regulatory team includes over 30 lawyers in London alone. The team operates as a multi-disciplinary unit and covers the full range of regulatory capability from competition to sanctions to enforcement actions and compliance.

Commenting on the appointment, Reed Smith partner Rob Falkner, co-chair of the Financial Markets and Regulatory Group, said:

“Douglas’s dual competencies on contentious and non-contentious matters make him a vital addition to our financial services regulatory offering in London. We are committed to growing our regulatory offering throughout the firm and very much look forward to Douglas’s arrival.”
