Mattias Luukkonen is a corporate attorney with extensive experience advising clients in the life science industry on intellectual property and commercial transactions, mergers and acquisitions, venture capital financings and general corporate matters. With experience in both private practice and as in-house counsel for several companies, Mattias brings a unique and valuable business-focused perspective to advising clients on transactional matters.
Mattias represents companies in all stages, from early stage start-ups to global life science organizations, on complex domestic and international transactions. His practice includes structuring, drafting and negotiating complex collaboration and license agreements, and agreements relating to pre-clinical and clinical research and development activities. He also has extensive experience drafting and rengotiating commercial agreements on both the supply and distribution side.
In addition to serving as outside counsel to clients, Mattias has served as General Counsel to two life science companies. Mattias gained a valuable business perspective when he joined a forensic DNA technology company as their first General Counsel. After the company's successful acquisition, Mattias joined a privately held biopharma company as its Chief Legal Officer, where he was extensively involved in building the company’s product pipeline through company acquisitions and in-licensing of new intellectual property, and driving the company's late stage drug candidate towards approval through the launch of global clinical trials.
Prior to law school Mattias was a molecular biologist and did his post-doctoral training at Johnson and Johnson. After law school, Mattias clerked for the Honorable Barry T. Moskowitz, United States District Court for the Southern District of California, before joining the corporate department of a global law firm.
Mattias has done pro bono work for the California Innocence Project, the San Diego Volunteer Lawyers Program, and has advised a service-disabled veteran-owned business in its corporate and commercial contracting activities.
