Cem (/jem/) focuses his practice on trade secret and patent disputes involving complex technologies. Cem leverages his background in Industrial Engineering to analyze technical issues to assist clients in enforcing their intellectual property rights and defending against infringement allegations. Cem’s matters have involved a range of technologies, including LED technology, computer software, telecommunications networks, wireless network standards, web-enabled products and services, and protections for stock market data.
On the litigation side, Cem has worked in all aspects of litigation from pre-suit investigations and case development, through post-trial motion practice, including discovery production and disputes, claim construction proceedings, motions in limine, invalidity and non-infringement analysis, expert reports, and trial.
Cem was a member of a team that represented a Silicon Valley technology company that asserted trade secret theft against a former employee and his subsequent employer in a month-long jury trial, resulting in a very substantial damages verdict and injunctive relief in favor of Reed Smith’s client.
Cem’s litigation practice goes beyond patent and trade secret disputes – it also includes copyrights and common law misappropriation.
Outside of litigation, Cem has also conducted pre-suit investigations, has drafted non-infringement and freedom to operate opinions, and analyzed competitors’ products for infringement.
Cem is also building an active pro bono practice, most recently representing a prisoner in § 1983 action, and a tenant in a landlord-tenant dispute.
