Dan is a partner in the Energy & Natural Resources Group. He specializes in disputes and advisory matters within the fields of commodities and international trade (hard rock minerals, metals, oil and gas, particularly LNG); mining (exploration, production and regulatory); shipping; and offshore construction. Dan regularly acts for miners, oil and gas market participants and commodity traders, and has conducted arbitrations under, amongst others, SIAC, ICC, LCIA and LMAA, and the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules. He has also represented clients at numerous mediations, including complex multi-party disputes, and has guided several clients through the expert determination process.
Having been based in Singapore since 2010, Dan worked with a market-leading international arbitration practice before spending several years as senior in-house counsel with a mining major, where he supported the company’s iron ore, coal, copper and uranium marketing businesses and assisted with group-wide projects and disputes. Dan has been actively involved in the development and refinement of a number of industry-standard commodity contracts, and the implementation of market-based pricing mechanisms and standardisation within developing markets such as iron ore and LNG. He regularly advises on multi-commodity marketing standardisation projects.
Dan has assisted clients with a broad array of both disputes and non-contentious matters across industries. He regularly advises on all aspects of the marketing, sale and supply chain of commodities, including the drafting and negotiation of offtake agreements, LNG SPAs and MSPAs, and other bespoke high value sale and purchase contracts; the management of force majeure incidents and other supply chain disruption; warehousing disputes; counterparty non-performance; risk analysis and management, and commodities pricing disputes.
Dan is a regular speaker at industry conferences relating to arbitration; commodities and international trade; mining and shipping. In 2016 he was recognised by Singapore Business Review as one of Singapore's most influential lawyers aged 40 and under.
