NEW YORK - Reed Smith partner Mark Goldstein this month was profiled as a 2020 New York Trailblazer in the New York Law Journal for his advocacy relating to mental health issues in the legal industry, including publishing several articles about his experience dealing with mental health and the stigma that surrounds it within the industry. Goldstein also frequently speaks on these issues at bar association, industry group, and other large events.

Goldstein, a labor and employment lawyer, worked through anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder – and, following a leave of absence from the firm, returned stronger than ever (he was promoted in each of 2019 and 2020). His Law Journal profile explains that Goldstein’s articles, all three of which were published in The American Lawyer, positively impacted many legal practitioners undergoing similar circumstances throughout the industry.

Goldstein’s experience, the Law Journal explains, also gives him unique insight into employer-employee issues. To that end, Goldstein is one of the leaders of a team of Reed Smith employers that began looking into the workplace-implications of the COVID-19 virus. Goldstein counsels clients on a variety of day-to-day and also big-picture workplace issues, including policy and handbook development; risk assessment and litigation avoidance; compliance with and overseeing anti-discrimination/harassment and other equal employment opportunity laws; wage and hour compliance; internal investigations; hiring, discipline, discharge, reduction-in-force, and restructuring decisions; workplace training; enforcement of non-competes and other restrictive covenants; and a wide variety of other employment issues.

New York Trailblazers 2020 is a special supplement that spotlights professionals who are “agents of change” and have taken extra measures to contribute to positive outcomes.
