Tomos is a senior associate in the Entertainment and Media Group. He is an experienced lawyer who acts across a wide range of media and technology work, with a particular focus on content rights and distribution. His clients include content and rights owners, distributors and platforms, in particular in the television and broadcast sector.
Tomos has acted for globally renowned clients including the BBC, ITV, Viacom, BT, Star TV, Amazon, Facebook and NBC Universal. Prior to joining Reed Smith he trained and practised at the legacy firm Olswang, one of the leading TMT practices in the UK. He also spent three years working in house at Sky, the leading European pay television operator, focusing on movie and major series acquisitions as well as its music offering. Along with various secondments to clients including Facebook, this experience has given Tomos a unique appreciation of the challenges facing both traditional and innovative content businesses, and the need for clear and practical legal input. His significant technology and telecoms experience gives him a deep understanding of the drivers of the constantly evolving content distribution business.
Tomos's recent experience includes:
- Acting for BBC Studios on its deal with Discovery to split the UKTV channel portfolio in the UK.
- Advising sports rights owners on the exploitation of their audiovisual content, and content platforms on their acquisition of sports rights.
- Representing licensors and licensees of major television content, including acquisitions from most of the major U.S. movie and television content owners.
- Acting for television broadcasters and on-demand service providers in their arrangements with music collecting societies in the UK.
- Advising channel operators on their carriage deals with pay television platforms
- Advising channel operators on their advertising sales agreements with Sky Media.
- Advising operators in the media space on a range of technology and outsourcing agreements.
- Advising new media platforms on UK broadcast regulation and Ofcom requirements.
Tomos has been recommended in the 2019 UK edition of The Legal 500. He speaks regularly at industry and client events, including Digital TV Group events, and courses, including the IP transactions course at University College London.
