Reed Smith was founded in Pittsburgh in 1877 and has maintained a leading presence in the city ever since. In 2009, our new office – located at Reed Smith Centre – was one of the first LEED-certified workspaces that helped jump-start the modernization of the city's "Fifth Avenue Corridor," on the perimeter of Pittsburgh's Cultural District. Today, Reed Smith is the largest law office in the city, with more than 250 lawyers. Our team includes e-discovery and staff attorneys working from the firm’s innovative Global Customer Centre, also in Pittsburgh, who provide service to clients and other Reed Smith lawyers around the world.
Our history in and dedication to Pittsburgh is evident in many of the Pittsburgh-based clients we have proudly served, quite a few for generations, including PNC, United States Steel Corporation, Heinz, PPG Industries, the University of Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon University. At the same time, we are keenly focused on technology start-ups and other entities that are looking to add to the rich tradition of innovation, transformation and entrepreneurship that have distinguished and sustained the city over the decades. And, as our region's vast natural resources are re-establishing Pittsburgh as one of North America's energy centers, we are uniquely positioned to provide the entire spectrum of legal services attendant to that phenomenon.
Depth and breadth defines our Pittsburgh office, in having representation among each of the firm's practice and industry groups and in having a market position that allows us to attract and retain top legal talent. Our Pittsburgh lawyers serve clients both locally and around the globe. In fact, Pittsburgh-based lawyers annually bring their vitality, dedication and acumen to 70 percent of the firm's 250 largest clients.
We understand and embrace the civic and charitable imperatives associated with Reed Smith's prominence in the local business community. We serve as adjunct faculty members, mentors, volunteers, and nonprofit board and committee members. Our support of initiatives such as The Pittsburgh Promise is reflective of our commitment to Pittsburgh's future – a future that we will have a large hand in shaping and molding. And our pro bono efforts and diversity and inclusion initiatives are both extensive and acclaimed.
