Tom has particularly strong experience in international arbitration, having worked on a number of cases relating to investment treaty arbitration and public international law. Tom has experience of acting on arbitration cases for the Respondent under UNCITRAL and ICSID rules, in disputes arising out of Bilateral and Multilateral Investment Treaties. Recent experience includes disputes regarding the nationalization of strategic assets, alleged state expropriation of mineral assets, and breaches of other commercial agreements and international law.

Prior to qualifying into the Global Commercial Disputes Group, Tom also sat in the Financial Industry Group (focusing on banking law), Tech & Data (focusing on data protection, privacy and cybersecurity breaches) and was seconded to two renowned human rights organisations to support their strategic litigation.

Tom is also heavily involved in pro bono opportunities at Reed Smith, including working with Liberty, one of the UK’s leading human rights and civil liberties organisations, 28 Too Many, to support their work to end female genital mutilation in Africa, and Reprieve, supporting their work to bring an end to the death penalty and close Guantanamo Bay. As a trainee, Tom was seconded to both Liberty and Reprieve, joining their casework teams on strategic human rights litigation, actions against the police, secret prisons, and domestic civil liberties work (including the right to protest, privacy rights and equality law).

Tom is a member of the Junior London Solicitors Litigation Association (JLSLA), the International Chamber of Commerce Young Arbitrators Forum (ICC YAF), the Young International Arbitration Group (YIAG) of the LCIA, and the Young Institute for Transnational Arbitration (Young ITA).

Tom graduated with first class honours in Philosophy from the University of Leeds.
