November 10, 2014, San Francisco — David E. Weiss has been named the Managing Partner of Reed Smith’s San Francisco office, effective immediately.

“David, whose busy practice connects him with our global network, has a strong rapport with the partners, associates, and staff in San Francisco,” said Reed Smith’s Global Managing Partner, Sandy Thomas. “Furthermore, he holds a clear vision for the firm’s continued growth in Northern California, especially in synergy with our office in Palo Alto.”

Mr. Weiss takes the reigns from Raymond A. Cardozo, who was recently named Chair of the Reed Smith’s Global Litigation Department, which includes more than 900 litigation attorneys in the U.S., Europe, Middle East, and Asia. During Mr. Cardozo’s tenure, Reed Smith’s San Francisco office expanded in such key areas as Finance, Labor and Employment, Intellectual Property, and Appellate, to become the third largest law firm office in the city.

“Ray is an exemplary partner, who puts the firm first, and manifests our core values,” said Weiss. “I look forward to building on his example through further successful engagements, high-profile lateral recruitment, and further community involvement.”

“I also look forward to working together with our new Silicon Valley Managing Partner, Don Reinke, in growing our business in Northern California,” added Weiss. “We have great attorneys, excellent practices, and a strong history in California and the Bay Area that goes back more than a century. Moreover, Reed Smith is a great place to work, and we’ll continue our focus on attracting top talent at all levels.”

As a San Francisco-based partner in Reed Smith’s Global Insurance Recovery Group, Weiss, who joined the firm in 2007, leads corporate policyholders through complex insurance coverage disputes. In nearly 25 years in practice, Weiss has earned a go-to reputation for helping clients in a wide variety of insurance matters, from high-stakes litigation, to providing advice to policyholders with respect to the presentation of claims, and the successful negotiation of settlements.

Weiss has been recognized among the Best Lawyers for the last three years and in Super Lawyers each year since 2010. Moreover, he has played a key role in U.S. News - Best Lawyers naming Reed Smith the “U.S. Law Firm of the Year in Insurance Law” for the second consecutive year.

While his work is international in scope, Weiss has called San Francisco home ever since his college days. He attended UC Berkeley before receiving his JD, cum laude, in 1990 from the University of San Francisco School of Law, where he was a member of the McAuliffe Honor Society and the Law Review.

Weiss is a frequent author and speaker on many issues of immediate concern to his clients, such as cyber-security in the insurance and healthcare industries, disaster coverage in regards to the recent Napa Earthquake, and continuing questions over the financial costs of the Ebola crisis. As a member of Reed Smith’s recently formed Global Ebola Task Force, Weiss is helping address numerous client issues facing businesses related to the spread of the virus in West Africa and around the world.
