February 2, 2015 – Reed Smith LLP today announced the addition of Kevin Cadwell as a partner in its Intellectual Property, Information and Innovation Practice in Houston.

Cadwell was formerly a partner in the Houston office of Baker Botts, where he co-chaired the Energy IP Practice.

“Kevin is a great strategic addition to our Intellectual Property Practice,” said Jim Hultquist, Reed Smith’s Intellectual Property Practice Co-Leader. “He is well-known to our group and is a nationally respected litigator. He will enhance our IP capabilities in Houston – a growing practice in that office – and he will provide service to our energy and other clients across a broad spectrum of industries.”

Cadwell represents public and private companies in complex commercial litigation and IP litigation, including individuals, officers, directors and employees. In addition to IP matters, Cadwell handles fraud claims, contract matters, shareholder and securities suits, and government investigations, in addition to representing clients in toxic tort, pharmaceutical and other products liability disputes.

“The ability to help grow Reed Smith’s commercial and IP litigation practices in both Houston and Silicon Valley was very attractive to me. I’ve had experience building out offices in new markets, and I plan to contribute those skills in both Houston and Silicon Valley,” Cadwell said. “I’m also looking forward to diversifying my commercial litigation practice serving the firm’s incredibly diverse client base. My clients also will benefit from the breadth of practices and geographic scope of Reed Smith’s services.”

Cadwell joined Baker Botts after graduating from Vanderbilt University Law School in 2002. In addition to his energy IP litigation work in Houston, he was a founding member of that firm’s Palo Alto office, where he has maintained close client relationships.

“Kevin’s significant experience in the intellectual property aspects of energy law and his ongoing relationships in Silicon Valley make him a great fit for Reed Smith,” said David Thompson, managing partner of the firm’s Houston office. “He has strong, positive relationships in this community and a solid presence as a respected litigator in Houston and Palo Alto, two offices we are actively expanding.”

Consistently named among the Texas “Rising Star” attorneys, Cadwell joins Reed Smith’s nearly 100 IP attorneys around the world who deal solely with intellectual property matters, such as patent, trademark and copyright (including software) infringement, trade secrets and unfair competition, international dispute resolution, insurance coverage claims, Internet and new media, data security and privacy, information governance, and other issues. The firm’s IP litigation team members have won large-ticket disputes in courts and before tribunals, including the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the U.S. International Trade Commission, the World Intellectual Property Organization and the International Chamber of Commerce.

BTI Litigation Outlook 2013 ranked the IP group a “Powerhouse,” naming Reed Smith among the best law firms in this area of litigation, based on extensive interviews with more than 350 general counsel and chief legal officers of various large companies. The Legal Intelligencer named the firm’s IP Practice the 2012 Pennsylvania “Litigation Department of the Year.” Moreover, Reed Smith’s IP lawyers are regularly recognized as leading lawyers in the World Trademark Review 1000, Chambers USA, The Best Lawyers in America, and as "Leading IP Strategists" by Intellectual Asset Management Magazine.
