Related Professionals: James C. Martin Colin E. Wrabley

(10 June 2014)  Reed Smith is pleased to announce that Appellate Group partners James C. Martin and Colin E. Wrabley have been honored with The Burton Award for Distinguished Legal Writing.

The Burton Awards, established in 1999, are funded by the Burton Foundation, a non-profit, academic organization, which is run in association with the Library of Congress and is devoted to recognizing and rewarding excellence in legal writing.

Reed Smith is among thirty law firms represented by recipients of the “2014 Distinguished Legal Writing Award” in the “law firm” category. Winners were chosen from hundreds of nominations of articles published in 2013.

Martin and Wrabley were recognized for their article, “Using Privately Provided Out-Of-Court Relief to Defeat Class Certification,” which was published in July 2013 by the Defense Research Institute for their DRI Conference on Class Actions.

Martin is a partner working out of the Pittsburgh, New York and Los Angeles offices, who has specialized in appellate law for more than 30 years. Wrabley is a Pittsburgh-based partner with extensive counseling, litigation and appellate experience across a broad range of substantive legal issues in state and federal courts.

The Burton Awards Academic Board, which reviewed this year’s nominations, was led by Virginia Wise, Harvard Law School; Philip M. Genty, Columbia Law School; Jeanne Merino, Stanford Law School; Judge Ed Forstenzer, California’s Superior Court (retired); William Ryan, former Chair of the White House Plain Language Committee; and William C. Burton, the founder and chair of the event.

This year’s honors were conferred at the Burton Awards Fifteenth Annual Awards Program, which were held last night in Washington, D.C. at the Library of Congress.
