Welcome to this year’s edition of our survey of companies and the law firms that represent them.  You’ll find our customary wealth of charts in these pages: an overall look at the Fortune 500*, plus some breakouts showing the most used law firms in some crucial practice areas.

As for commentary, we’re doing something a little different this year. Previously we examined the state of the client-law firm relationship from an economic and operational standpoint. Did the economic crisis lead to big changes in the power relationship? Yes and no. This year, we get a little more personal. We asked corporate counsel and some law firm partners what bothers them about their opposite numbers. They dished—but they also offered solutions to the main problem, a breakdown in communication.
