Each year, Virginia Lawyers Weekly recognizes attorneys in their first 10 years of practice who have made a name for themselves and exhibit determination and accomplishments that establish them as future leaders. Honorees will be recognized on October 17 at an awards ceremony in Richmond.
Oberlander handles litigation matters, provides day-to-day advice and counseling and does employment and immigration specialty work for corporate clients. He has a successful track record representing companies in precedent-setting cases involving the False Claims Act and the Virginia Human Rights Act. In the past year, Oberlander has defended clients across the nation in disputes involving discrimination, retaliation, whistleblowing, defamation, trade secrets and wage and hour.
He was ranked by Chambers USA among Associates to Watch for Virginia Labor & Employment from 2021-2024. He was just 35 when he got his first Chambers USA ranking.
In addition to his heavy case load, Oberlander is active in professional and community organizations. He is president-elect of the Richmond Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, a member of the Virginia Bar Association’s labor and employment section, and a member of the Richmond LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce. Currently, he is the Richmond office representative for the firm’s LGBTQ+ business inclusion group, and previously served as a diversity, equity and inclusion representative to the firm’s business inclusion groups.
Oberlander is also committed to pro bono work and civic involvement. He provides pro bono employment-related advice to numerous nonprofits, including those serving families and individuals navigating early-onset dementia and Alzheimer’s, working to prevent homelessness and furthering LGBTQ+ health equity. In addition, he is part of a global team of Reed Smith lawyers working to fight against legislation criminalizing homosexuality in the Middle East.
