NEW YORK – Global law firm Reed Smith today announced that New York Governor Kathy Hochul has granted a pardon for a pro bono client of the firm, clearing a drug conviction dating back to the late 1980s. Governor Hochul has granted the pardon following a recommendation from the Clemency Advisory Panel. The pardon eliminates the client’s criminal record and will help protect him from adverse collateral consequences associated with the decades-old conviction. Since taking office, Governor Hochul has issued a total of 139 grants of clemency.

“This pardon represents the very best of what pro bono work can achieve; restoring dignity and removing barriers that have followed our client for decades,” said Evan Barr, Reed Smith partner. “Our team worked tirelessly to present a compelling case for clemency, and we are gratified that the governor recognized that he deserves a clean slate.”

The Reed Smith team that prepared and filed the clemency petition was led by Evan Barr and included Rafael Szmid and Bradley J. Myrthil.
