Zaq is a State and Local tax associate in Reed Smith’s San Francisco office. He represents multistate businesses across a diverse array of industries in state and local tax controversy, transactional, and unclaimed property matters. Zaq counsels and advocates for clients in complex disputes before a variety of state and local agencies, including multistate unclaimed property audits, state income tax audits, and sales and use tax audits. He also provides assistance and tax advice in complex multistate transactions.
Prior to law school, Zaq worked as a universal banker and small business specialist at a local bank in Durango, Colorado. During law school, Zaq was a Senior Editor on the California Western Law Review, served as a student representative in the Student Bar Association, and received a Distinguished Advocate award for his advocacy in the Gill Trial Competition. He also worked for a tax controversy law firm in San Diego; the San Diego City Attorney’s Civil Division; the California Department of Justice’s Appeals, Writs, and Trials Division; and U.S. District Court Judge Anthony J. Battaglia. While earning his LL.M., Zaq served as a delegate for the UC Irvine Associated Graduate Students’ Lobby Corps and worked as a tax extern for a major international construction company.
