LONDON – Global law firm Reed Smith advised Bute Energy on a £160 million debt-financing arrangement with Lloyds Bank and Rabobank for Twyn Hywel Energy Park, a 93.8MW onshore wind project in Caerphilly, South Wales.

The financing will enable the construction of Twyn Hywel Energy Park, Bute Energy’s first project to move into the construction phase. The development was granted consent by Welsh Ministers in November 2024, and Bute Energy secured a £72.24/MWh Contract for Difference for the project’s full capacity in February 2026. Construction is expected to commence in early summer 2026, with the project anticipated to be operational by the end of 2027.

Twyn Hywel Energy Park is the first in a pipeline of 12 onshore wind projects across Wales being developed by Bute Energy, with a total generating capacity of over 2GW. The portfolio could contribute 25% of the Welsh government's target for 100% of electricity demand to be met by renewables by 2035, and 18% of the UK government's Clean Power 2030 mission. Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and the Welsh Pension Partnership have invested in Bute Energy’s development portfolio through transactions also handled by Reed Smith.

Sid Anverali, project director at Bute Energy, said: “Securing the debt financing for Twyn Hywel Energy Park is a landmark moment – not just for this project, but for Bute Energy as a business. This is our first project to move into construction, and that milestone reflects years of rigorous development work and the confidence our financing partners have placed in us. The team at Reed Smith has been working with Bute Energy from the very beginning. Their assistance with project-level matters and financing arrangements up through the capital stack has been vital to our journey”.

The Reed Smith team advising Bute Energy was led by Maccailein Campbell, Brigid North, and Charles Jurd with support from a cross-practice team including Yannis Potamias, Laura Riddeck, Simone Goligorsky, Matthew Bowen, Caspar Fox, Ethan Dodd, Eleanor Jack, Cassandra Acquah, Sofia Loopuit, Courtney Kruger, and Ren Iioka.

Bute Energy was also advised by Deloitte and Burges Salmon.
