Reed Smith Congratulates Alumna Susan Edwards on Being Named Chief Counsel at HHS-OIG

The HHS Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG) has announced that Susan Edwards, formerly an attorney in Reed Smith’s Life Sciences Health Industry Group (“LSHI”), has been named to the post of Chief Counsel, the top legal position in the agency.

The chief counsel at HHS-OIG leads the Office of Counsel to the Inspector General, an office that acts as a full-service in-house legal counsel to HHS-OIG. Additionally, the Office of Counsel is responsible for representing OIG in settlement of False Claims Act cases, monitors compliance with corporate integrity agreements, develops compliance program guidance, and renders advisory opinions on application of fraud and abuse statutes to certain health care arrangements. As Chief Counsel, she is also one of the leaders of the new DOJ-HHS False Claims Act Working Group.

Edwards has previously served as Acting Chief Counsel on a rotating basis and stepped in as Acting Inspector General for a brief time last year before current Inspector General T. March Bell was confirmed to the post. Edwards has also served as the Assistant IG for Legal Affairs and the Chief for the Industry Guidance Branch of the HHS-OIG.

We congratulate our former colleague for this significant professional achievement.
