SEC to Consider Climate-Related Disclosures

On March 10, 2022, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced that it will hold an open meeting on March 21, 2022.  The purpose of the meeting is to consider amendments aimed at enhancing and standardizing climate-related disclosures for investors. The meeting will be available to the public on the SEC's website.

The SEC did not provide details as to what the proposed amendments will entail.  The proposal will likely require companies to disclose more about climate-related risks.  Before its rule may be finalized, the SEC will need to notify the public of its proposed plan and seek comments, which will take months.

The proposal is expected to require companies to disclose more about the risks posed to their operations by rising temperatures, and it could force firms to reveal details such as the amount of energy they buy.
