More online regulation to come in Singapore

The Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act was introduced in 2019 and the Foreign Interference (Countermeasures) Act in 2021 to deal with online falsehoods and foreign interference.

The Broadcasting Act was amended in early 2023 by the Online Safety Bill to deal with harms that impact user safety, such as suicide, self-harm, cyber bullying and content likely to undermine racial and religious harmony.

However, there are still areas which may soon be regulated - scams, malicious online activity and online gambling. Stay tuned.

Mrs Teo said: “In the online space, the Government does not set out to dictate or curtail the adoption of technology or use of online platforms. “However, we have a duty to protect our citizens from online harms, the same way we deal with threats in the physical domain.”
