(Philadelphia, PA, February 4, 2000)  Reed Smith Shaw & McClay LLP has announced the appointment of Lou Heidelberger as Firmwide Director of its Intellectual Property (IP) Practice Group.  Heidelberger, who joined Reed Smith in 1988, has driven the growth of the firm's IP practice in Philadelphia.

Firmwide managing partner, Daniel Booker, states "Lou has been a formative asset to our firm in his steadfast leadership of one of Reed Smith's most influential practice groups.  As corporate growth continues in areas such as Internet and web-based business, biotechnology, telecommunications, e-commerce, and emerging technologies, we expect Intellectual Property to take the lead."

Reed Smith's clients also reacted positively.  Among them, San Diego based QUALCOMM's Senior Vice President, Proprietary Rights Counsel, Louis Lupin said: "Reed Smith and Lou Heidelberger in particular have played a significant role in assisting QUALCOMM with the defense and resolution of key intellectual property disputes, and many of the intricacies of our company's intellectual property filings involving our pioneering CDMA technology licensed to over 65 leading communications manufacturers worldwide.  In the world of mobile and fixed wireless systems, having superior IP counsel one can rely on to rapidly move the corporation forward is essential to QUALCOMM's success."

Heidelberger attributes the success of the IP Practice to the credentials and initiative of the group's attorneys and synergies flowing from teaming the practice with the capabilities of Reed Smith as a leading full service law firm.  "Reed Smith's Intellectual Property Group attorneys, which number more than 30, are all top notch attorneys who in addition to their law degrees have expertise in almost every technical discipline.  This expertise combined with our understanding of our clients' market and product intricacies and the seamless integration of the IP group with Reed Smith's litigation and transactional expertise give us the edge over other firms."

"It is my goal to double the size of our Intellectual Property Group over the next few years by continuing to serve the needs of clients which range from emerging companies to Fortune 500 as well as international companies, by pursuing additional IP business and selectively adding high quality IP attorneys and firms," adds Heidelberger.

Heidelberger has been active in local, national and international proprietary rights, patent and trademark coalitions and associations, and lectures before numerous trade associations and CLE panels on related technology protection and commercialization issues.  He concentrates his practice in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical, telecommunications, software and e-commerce fields.  He received his B.S. in metallurgical engineering from Drexel University in 1971 and his J.D. from Temple University in 1975.
