(July 8, 2009, Chicago) – Reed Smith LLP, one of the 15 largest law firms in the world, today announced that John F. Hagan, Jr. has joined the firm’s Chicago office as a partner in its Midwest Commercial Litigation Group.
Mr. Hagan was formerly a partner in the Chicago office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP, where he had extensive trial and litigation experience across a wide range of areas, including general commercial litigation, class actions, bankruptcy litigation, toxic tort, antitrust, and franchise and distribution litigation.
“John is an experienced trial lawyer who has represented some of the nation’s leading corporations in high-profile litigation,” said Robert A. Roth, Chair of the firm's Midwest Commercial Litigation Group. ”For example, the National Law Journal featured John’s jury trial work for IPSOS, a leading market research company, in its annual Top Ten Defense Verdicts issue. John’s bankruptcy trial work for United Airlines and Tower Automotive likewise garnered recognition in the press and among his peers.”
Mr. Hagan’s bankruptcy litigation work for United Airlines was featured in the March 2005 edition of The American Lawyer and the April 2005 edition of Corporate Counsel Magazine, and the September 1997 edition of The American Lawyer noted Mr. Hagan’s class action work for a former division of International Paper Company.
Mr. Hagan has also represented BMW of North America in a number of high-stakes matters, including trial work successfully defending the automaker’s national allocation system for distributing BMW vehicles, and defeating injunctive efforts to block BMW’s plans to reintroduce the MINI Cooper in the United States.
“As its top ranking in the recent BTI Client Relationship Scorecard confirms, Reed Smith dedicates a tremendous amount of effort to client service, including taking the time to understand each client’s business, and listening to – and acting on – client feedback. That service-oriented approach, together with Reed Smith’s strong litigation presence in Chicago and its expansive national and international platform, makes Reed Smith an exciting place to practice law, and will help me further grow my practice,” Mr. Hagan said.
A 1996 graduate of New York University School of Law, Mr. Hagan received his B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1993.
“Our busy Chicago commercial litigation group will benefit from John’s wealth of trial and litigation experience, as well as his ability to attract and retain litigation clients for the firm,” said Michael LoVallo, Reed Smith’s Chicago Managing Partner. “He is an outstanding addition to our Midwest presence.”
