“This is a well-deserved honor for Miles, who has been a stalwart of our Virginia Commercial Disputes Group for more than 20 years,” said Sandy Thomas, Reed Smith’s Global Managing Partner. “He has an illustrious record of service to the firm, to the profession and to the community. We are extremely pleased he has been honored for his stellar career achievements.”
A lifelong Virginia attorney with nearly 45 years of experience, Dumville joined Reed Smith when it combined with his previous firm, Hazel Thomas PC in 1999. At the time of the combination, he was Hazel Thomas’ Managing Partner for the Richmond office, a member of that firm’s Executive Committee, and a partner in its Litigation and Government Relations Practices. After the Reed Smith – Hazel & Thomas combination, Dumville continued to serve as the Managing Partner of the Richmond office until 2017, and as a member of the firm’s Professional Responsibility Committee. He was also a three-year member of the Board of the Virginia Bar Association and the Chair of the Association’s Civil Litigation Section.
“I am grateful to be one of the 24 members of the Virginia Lawyers Hall of Fame this year,” said Dumville. “My fellow class members are distinguished and highly accomplished and I am honored to be among them.
Lawyers are selected for inclusion based on their accomplishments, contributions to the development of the law in Virginia, contributions to the bar and to the commonwealth at large, and efforts to improve the quality of justice in Virginia.
Dumville’s experience includes resolution of complex business and commercial disputes through litigation, arbitration and mediation, including trial and appellate work in both state and federal courts, primarily in the Mid-Atlantic states and the District of Columbia. Among his notable litigation successes is a win for mining magnate Hugh Caperton in a long-tailed dispute with Massey Coal Company. The Caperton case is the subject of the non-fiction book The Price of Justice by Laurence Leamer and is believed to have served as the basis for The Appeal by John Grisham.
Dumville also achieved an illustrious record of active involvement in pro bono cases, community service and professional engagement, including representation of immigrants fleeing the Middle East, providing them with assistance in securing the employment, education and housing they require to rebuild their lives in the U.S. and to attain citizenship. A decorated Vietnam era Army veteran himself, he is passionate about assisting active duty and retired U.S. military personnel with securing the benefits and services to which they are entitled and representing them on matters ranging from landlord-tenant disputes to debtor-creditor issues.
Dumville and other members of the 2020 class will be celebrated at a virtual program broadcast November 18. Each honoree also will be profiled in a special supplement of Virginia Lawyers Weekly in November.
