WASHINGTON, D.C. – Reed Smith is pleased to announce that partner Tyree P. Jones has been named a 2022 Employment Law Trailblazer by the National Law Journal. Jones – who serves as chair of Reed Smith’s Labor and Employment Group, co-chair of its global ESG practice, and is a member of the firm’s Executive Committee – was recognized for his more than for 36 years handling complex, high-impact employment rights matters, and for being a champion of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in business in law.

Since launching his practice in 1986, Jones has focused on furthering clients’ business objectives and increasing the elevation of minority and LBGTQ+ lawyers in the profession. Jones also routinely wins cases for clients facing violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Title VII, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the False Claims Act and the Fair Labor Standards Act and state law counterparts.

Among his pioneering DEI work, Jones has served as general counsel of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) since its inception in 2009. Today, the LCLD has grown to include more than 400 members, who serve as either general counsel of major corporations or managing partners of the nation's leading law firms. Members lead by example, take action, and challenge the legal profession to prepare future generations of diverse talent for the highest positions of leadership.

“Throughout his cutting-edge career, Tyree has championed greater diversity within business and law,” said Sandy Thomas, Reed Smith’s global managing partner. “His contributions to our ESG and DEI efforts have been, and continue to be, enormous, and his commitment to our longstanding relationship with LCLD is incredibly valuable to us.”

Jones helped found, then led Reed Smith’s DEI program through its formative years, during which time he launched a series of initiatives, including championing the adoption of benefits for partners in civil unions and securing medical benefits for the firm’s LBGTQ+ employees seeking gender-reassignment procedures. He further expanded the firm’s DEI program to the firm’s worldwide offices. This pioneering work earned Reed Smith a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index as early as 2014, a rarity at the time.

Today, as one of the two U.S. co-chairs of Reed Smith’s global ESG practice, Jones is working with the firm’s senior management team on developing tools to enhance DEI and identify the metrics needed to evaluate its impact.

Further recent recognitions of Jones’s longstanding service to his community and the legal profession include Georgetown University’s John Carroll Award, the university’s highest alumni honor, as well as Georgetown University Law Center's Paul R. Dean Alumni Award, the law school’s highest honor for alumni.
