The most significant change to patent law in the past 50 years is coming to Europe. On October 7, 2022, it was announced that the long-awaited Unified Patent Court (UPC) and the European Patent with Unitary Effect (Unitary Patent or UP) should become official on April 1, 2023 with the sunrise period beginning on January 1, 2023. This new system will significantly change the European patent landscape, and it should be at the top of your IP strategy. Reed Smith Paris partners Marianne Schaffner and Thierry Lautier will present a series of podcasts about the coming changes and how to prepare your company. In this first episode, they will provide an overview of the geography of the Member States and the main changes induced by the Unitary Patent and the UPC.
Stay tuned for the second and third installments where the team will discuss what you need to do with your own European patents and also your competitors’ European patents.
This podcast was recorded prior to the release of the expected UPC start date.
