Thuy is partner in the Real Estate Group, based in San Francisco. With a focus on complex commercial real estate transactions, she represents institutional developers, owners, buyers, sellers, lenders, and borrowers in transactions involving acquisition, disposition, leasing, and secured finance throughout California and the United States. Thuy focuses on representing real estate investment trusts and other institutional clients in acquisitions and sale-leaseback transactions of net lease properties, often involving major multi-state portfolios of properties and under extremely aggressive timelines. She advises clients in all stages of a transaction, from the structuring of the deal to the management of diligence to the negotiation of key documents, including purchase and sale agreements and long-term lease agreements. Thuy also has substantial experience representing lenders and borrowers in real estate secured loans and construction financing. A portion of Thuy’s practice is devoted to transactions involving the acquisition and development of utility-scale renewable energy facilities, including wind, solar, and battery storage projects.
In addition to her legal experience, Thuy makes it a point to understand her client’s business priorities, the value of collaborative working relationships with clients and counter-parties alike, and the importance of adapting to rapidly evolving timelines – having spent six months on secondment as in-house counsel for a premier REIT client. During that time, Thuy counseled the client’s business and executive teams in connection with prospective acquisitions while managing dozens of transactions. For her contributions during the secondment, the client commended Thuy for “seamlessly and expertly stepp[ing] into a challenging, fast-paced environment working on mission critical acquisitions for the Company” and handling acquisitions “with the expert eye afforded to her by quality law firm training, but with a business sense and understanding of the big picture that is often challenging for those not acclimated to an in-house legal role to grasp”.
Thuy is also an active firm citizen. Since 2017, Thuy has also served on Reed Smith’s Hiring Committee, where she focuses on recruiting diverse talent while cultivating the next generation of legal leaders. In addition, Thuy serves as an integration mentor and formal career advisor for lateral hires and first-year associates –helping new arrivals integrate, meet internal benchmarks, navigate compensation issues, and consider career promotion. Thuy is also the Deputy Partner Chair of the Pacific and Asian American Lawyers and Staff (PAALS) Business Inclusion Group, which promotes the interests of Asian American talent within the firm and the broader communities and fosters opportunities for professional, personal, and cultural growth.
At her alma mater, UC Law San Francisco, Thuy serves as an alumni coach for the law school’s distinguished moot court program, teaching students how to think analytically and improve their oral advocacy skills. Since she started in this role in 2016, Thuy has led several teams to successful final rounds and championships in state and national competitions, including winning first place at the Chicago Bar Moot Court competition.
