Reed Smith was connected with WSI through RedRover, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing animals out of crisis and strengthening the human-animal bond. RedRover’s Purple Leash Project, a partnership with Purina, works to increase the availability of pet-friendly domestic violence shelters and help survivors leave abusive situations without having to leave their pets behind.
The Reed Smith team advised WSI on zoning, land use, and permitting issues related to the development of pet accommodations for shelter residents. The team successfully demonstrated that the proposed pet area constituted an accessory residential use rather than a commercial kennel or boarding operation. As a result, the scheduled variance hearing was no longer required, allowing WSI to avoid further zoning approvals and related application costs.
The resolution enables WSI to move forward with a project that will help remove a significant barrier faced by domestic violence survivors who may otherwise be unable to seek safety because they cannot leave their pets behind.
The matter is part of Reed Smith’s ongoing commitment to providing pro bono legal support to organizations working to address critical community needs. Nearly 70 Reed Smith lawyers have signed up to support RedRover matters, providing legal guidance on a range of issues affecting animals and the people who depend on them.
