The widely publicized deal is subject to approval by the National Hockey League board of governors and is expected to close before the end of the year.

The Reed Smith team was led by Global Corporate Group partner Kristin Wells, head of the firm’s global sports practice, and included partner John Algie with associates Doug Sayranian, Danielle Scalise, and numerous other attorneys across multiple practice areas.

As an associate in 1999, Wells worked with Mario Lemieux, who was then the Penguins center, and an ownership group to purchase the team out of bankruptcy.
