Simonis and Hagedorn join Reed Smith from Paul Hastings, where Simonis chaired the firm’s Orange County office and headed that office’s real estate practice group.
“One of our strategic priorities has been to grow our talent in California across several key practices, including our real estate practice. The lateral market in the region is very strong and quite competitive, and we know that an important factor in attracting talent is to bring on established lawyers who are highly regarded within their respective areas of practice. We believe we have done just that with John and Dan joining us,” said Doug Cameron, Reed Smith’s managing partner for the Americas. “The addition of John and Dan sends a clear signal to the market that Reed Smith is committed to growing in Southern California, and is a firm where the very best lawyers can thrive.”
One of Southern California’s preeminent real estate lawyers, Simonis has served as lead partner in hundreds of complex matters over his 37-year career. He represents investors, owners, developers, and operators in complex real estate transactions and development matters, and has substantial experience in real estate joint ventures, funds, purchases and sales, leasing, financings, development and construction, with particular depth of experience in data centers and technology-related facilities.
Considered a rising star among the Southern California real estate legal community, Hagedorn practices in all areas of commercial real estate transactions, including joint ventures and the acquisition and disposition of commercial projects, including multifamily and affordable housing projects, industrial projects, retail centers, data centers, leasing, and real estate financings.
“The decision to join Reed Smith was one made with great deliberation, but what ultimately attracted me to the firm was the tremendous potential for practice and talent development and the prospect of exploring new opportunities with my clients,” said Simonis. “Reed Smith has an outstanding group of lawyers in this space, as well as ancillary practices, such as tax, finance, and private equity that I know are areas of great need for my clients. Speaking on behalf of Dan and myself, we are very excited to join the firm.”
Simonis and Hagedorn are the latest in a recent wave of lateral appointments to Reed Smith’s real estate practice and lawyers adjacent to the practice. The firm recently announced the arrivals of partner Tony Alfonso in Miami, who brings a technology and innovation aspect to the real estate practice, as well as a 12-member real estate finance team in New York, which included partners Randy Eckers, Michael Estreicher, Taila Martin, Alexander (A.J.) Sokoloff, and Samuel Lee.
“Our real estate practice group has exceptionally strong performers throughout the U.S., and a vibrant and growing practice in Southern California. Bringing John and Dan adds additional scope and depth to our real estate capabilities, while also complementing our current roster of real estate lawyers,” said Jimmy Theodorou, global chair of Reed Smith’s real estate practice. “In addition to contributing to our real estate team, John and Dan’s practice also complements our global private equity group, as they may identify and support opportunities for our existing private equity clients with real estate interests. Their arrival represents a significant win for our firm.”
