Karen is a partner in the Global Commercial Disputes Group. Her practice focuses on litigating and resolving complex commercial litigation matters as part of the firm’s Managed Care Team. The Managed Care Team includes litigators and regulatory specialists with a deep knowledge of issues affecting managed care and health insurance companies, including prescription drug benefit and medical policy issues, provider reimbursement issues (e.g., direct pay, reimbursement rate issues), member benefits and bad faith denial of benefits issues, Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) issues and general commercial and indemnity issues.
Karen’s litigation practice extends to commercial litigation and consumer financial services litigation. She has substantial experience defending mortgage lenders and servicers in cases involving alleged violations of the Truth in Lending Act (TILA), the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA) and Business & Professions Code § 17200 (UCL), as well as statutory and common law claims stemming from alleged predatory lending and unfair business practices. Karen has also dealt in the litigation context with issues of broader commercial applicability including the fiduciary duty and alter ego doctrines.
Karen is also a member of the firm’s E-Discovery Team, with experience managing large scale discovery efforts including advice regarding data preservation obligations and protocol, the coordination of international e-discovery processes and oversight of document review teams.
Karen is actively involved in firm activities with responsibilities that include (or have included) San Francisco Office Chair for the Reed Smith Womens’ Initiative Network (WINRS), member of the Summer Associate Hiring and Mentor Committees and Associate Development Partner for the San Francisco office.
