Matt Schlesinger, a partner in Reed Smith’s D.C. office, recently joined us from McKenna Long & Aldridge. Matt has extensive experience in the SAFETY Act and, in particular, its unique insurance requirements.
As part of the Homeland Security Act of 2002, Congress passed the Support Anti-Terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies Act of 2002, also known as the SAFETY Act. The intent of the SAFETY Act is to eliminate or minimize tort liability for the sellers of anti-terrorism products and services that have been approved by the Department of Homeland Security (“DHS”) should lawsuits arise from an act of terrorism. Sellers of anti-terrorism products and services should be familiar with the SAFETY Act and should take advantage of the liability limitations it offers. Many government contractors and other companies have already applied for SAFETY Act protection for their anti-terrorism technologies.
Matt was involved in the process of drafting the SAFETY Act’s regulations, particularly as they relate to the insurance aspects of the Act. He also has had extensive discussions with DHS officials about the SAFETY Act’s implementation and has helped numerous companies apply for SAFETY Act certification.
Reed Smith will sponsor a Tele-Seminar on February 23 at 2:00 p.m. If you would like additional information regarding the SAFETY Act or the seminar, please email Matt.
