Mental health issues in the legal profession continue to gain attention as a pervasive, yet hidden, problem. A landmark 2016 study by the American Bar Association and the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation revealed disproportionately high rates of mental health and substance use disorders among lawyers. In response, the ABA launched an innovative campaign to improve the health and well-being of the nation’s lawyers.

In 2018, Reed Smith was one of 13 inaugural firms to join the ABA’s campaign. Recently, one of our own lawyers, Mark Goldstein, detailed his personal struggle in the American Lawyer, dispelling the stigma around mental health issues and offering advice to other lawyers facing similar struggles. We want to continue sharing Mark’s story, and offer practical advice for lawyers and organizations seeking to support employees with mental health issues.
