Each year, at tax time, our State Tax team volunteers to help low-to-moderate-income individuals with their income tax returns and, if they qualify, obtain the benefit of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The EITC is one of the largest cash benefit programs in the United States, but it is administered through tax refunds, meaning eligible individuals must file a return to get the EITC. This can be a daunting task, and that’s where we come in.

Members of the State Tax group volunteer through a Philadelphia-based non-profit called The Campaign for Working Families Inc. (CWF). Last year alone, CWF volunteers helped over 20,000 individuals with their tax returns and helped them obtain over $36 million in tax refunds.  The average income of the individuals served by CWF volunteers is typically under $25,000.

Due to COVID-19 limitations we’ll be volunteering remotely through CWF’s online platform again this year, and we hope you’ll join us.

Anyone can participate (you don’t need to be a lawyer or a CPA), but interested volunteers must attend an IRS-certified training session. Reed Smith is “virtually” hosting a training session on Friday, January 28, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. ET.

To register for the training, visit the event page on CWF’s website. You will need to create an account if you don’t have one. Be sure to complete the required pre-training items before our January 28 session.

If you have any questions, please contact Kenny Levine.
