WASHINGTON, DC (JUNE 21, 2016) – Reed Smith LLP today announced the addition of Gerry Stegmaier as a partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property, Information and Innovation (iCubed) Group in Washington, D.C. Stegmaier was most recently a partner at Goodwin Procter where he led the D.C. privacy, data security and Internet strategy practice. In addition to Reed Smith, Stegmaier is also joining his alma mater, George Mason University Law School, to serve as practitioner-in-residence and a senior research fellow in its Law & Economics Center Program on the Economics of Privacy. The announcement of Stegmaier’s addition to the firm’s iCubed group builds on the group’s recent growth in London, Philadelphia, Houston and New York.

“The flow of digital data and its legal and personal implications increasingly affect all of our clients: how they collect, protect, share and use data has become a critical part of their daily business,” said Mark Melodia, co-chair of Reed Smith’s IP, Information & Innovation Group. “Gerry has a well-established – and well-deserved – reputation within the technology community and is uniquely positioned to help all of our industry teams and clients strategize and monetize data, while remaining mindful of the legal and reputational risks inherent in doing so.”

Stegmaier focuses his practice on corporate governance, privacy, information security and consumer protection and intellectual property and Internet issues. Much of his practice involves information and technology-related crises that span litigation, transactional and regulatory matters such as government investigations before agencies, including the Federal Trade Commission. In recent years, Stegmaier has helped automotive, health information technology, data management and advertising technology companies with all aspects of their data strategy.

“Data doesn’t care about borders but the law still does. Clients require advice that is both broad and deep across a changing global landscape. Reed Smith’s international reach, and innovative approach to information asset management and protection, marries perfectly with the challenges facing enterprises,” said Stegmaier.

Stegmaier obtained his J.D., magna cum laude, from George Mason University Law School, his Master’s degree from the Catholic University of America and his B.A. from George Mason University. Following law school, Stegmaier clerked at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He is a Certified Information Privacy Professional, has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, has presented at the Harvard Business School and the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business, and has testified before the U.S. Congress.

“Gerry is a terrific addition to our office here in Washington,” said Gary Thompson, Reed Smith’s Washington, D.C. office managing partner. “His deep ties to the national technology community are a great asset to our IP practice in D.C. and our iCubed practice’s support of technology, legal services innovation, and entrepreneurship.”

Reed Smith's Intellectual Property, Information and Innovation Group comprises more than 100 attorneys worldwide and, in addition to data and privacy issues, handles a range of IP matters for clients, including those involving patents, copyrights, trademarks, unfair competition and trade secrets, transactions, and domain name disputes. The attorneys have strong technical credentials, IP litigation skills, and jury trial experience, as well as extensive experience in the industries in which the firm's clients operate.
