“Considerable research on personal happiness and overall well-being shows that gratitude and giving are important elements of a balanced, productive life,” said Casey Ryan, Reed Smith’s Global Head of Legal Personnel and a member of the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Working Group to Advance Well-Being in the Legal Profession. “November is an excellent time for us to provide our people with meaningful opportunities to perform good deeds that help others, and affirm the values of generosity and personal engagement in the community.”
Reed Smith is among the inaugural cohort of 13 law firms in the United States that pledged support for the ABA’s innovative campaign to improve the health and well-being of the nation’s lawyers and support personnel. The ABA campaign is well-aligned with the firm’s Wellness Works initiative, which features a suite of innovative health and wellness opportunities organized around monthly themes.
In its first year, Wellness Works has provided numerous stress management, work-life balance, healthy habits, and healthy mindfulness events and activities. Among the opportunities planned during the firm’s “Month of Good Deeds” are those benefiting the Jewish victims of the recent domestic terrorist attack in Pittsburgh, disabled veterans, active duty military personnel, female victims of violence, senior citizens, hospitalized children, and individuals and families who are food insecure or economically at risk during the holiday season.
Among the various activities across the firm’s platform, Reed Smith personnel will be adopting families for the holidays, collaborating with Stockings for Soldiers, volunteering for local Meals on Wheels, supporting local food banks, assembling Thanksgiving food baskets, recruiting volunteers and raising funds for local nonprofits, conducting clothing drives to secure career attire for working women and warm pajamas for children, conducting a holiday auction of items they personally created or donated, and participating in a gift tree project to provide holiday gifts for individuals who would otherwise not receive them.
Each office will also have a “Wall of Good Deeds,” where employees who have been the recipient of a good deed at work or outside of work will have an opportunity to express their gratitude by posting a note publicly acknowledging each act.
