Reed Smith mourns the loss of our colleague and friend, commercial litigator Nicole “Nicky” Langesfeld, who lost her life in the recent collapse of part of the Champlain Towers South in Surfside, Fla.

Nicky was Reed Smith’s first summer associate in the Miami office in 2018, and she joined the firm the following year as an associate in the firm’s Insurance Recovery Group. Her practice focused on litigating and settling insurance coverage disputes on behalf of U.S. policyholders. As a bilingual lawyer with Argentinian roots, Nicky also worked on international litigation matters.

Nicky earned her J.D. from the University of Miami, where she was a member of the university’s Business Law Review, and she received two undergraduate degrees from the University of Florida.

Nicky, 26, is survived by her father, Pablo, mother, Andrea, and brother, Martin. Nicky’s husband, Luis Sadovnic, also lost his life in the tower collapse. They met while studying at the University of Florida in Gainesville and married in January 2021.

Nicky is remembered for her strong work ethic, humor, and constant smile. Her love for animals had no bounds. She connected with everyone in her own special way, leaving a profound loss for all who knew her.

“Nicky’s exceptional talents, compassion and positive energy will be greatly missed by all of us at Reed Smith,” said Doug Cameron, Managing Partner Americas. “We offer her family and friends our most heartfelt condolences, as well as everyone involved in, or affected by, this tragic event.”

Friends and family of Nicky and Luis have organized a GoFundMe page to help their families with travel and general expenses in the aftermath of this tragedy.
