Brad Rostolsky and Jennifer Pike penned “Ebola and Patient Privacy: Is Your Hospital Prepared?” which appeared on MEDCITY News on November 18th. The article discusses the privacy risks that exist for hospitals in the wake of several Ebola cases in the United States, especially under HIPAA. Brad and Jennifer emphasize that while hospital workers may be tempted to access, utilize and/or release information about patients who have (or may have) Ebola, such actions may be in violation of HIPAA, particularly if the data falls into the category of protected health information (PHI). The authors urge hospitals to remind their employees about HIPAA regulations and how PHI should be properly handled.
